kris, September 28, 2001 at 11:42:24 PM CEST Soulful Strut/Am I The Same Girl Earlier this week I posted a selection of 70's Sound and Funk tunes including Young-Holt Unlimited's 'Soulful Strut' and the vocal version 'Am I The Same Girl' originally by Barbara Acklin and covered by Dusty Springfield. I hadn't known that a vocal version existed until I found one by Swing Out Sister on a crappy Acid Jazz compilation. Thank Google for this great page on soulwalking.co.uk: "The record's backing tracks were used as a basis for Young-Holt Unlimited's instrumental hit 'Soulful Strut', with a piano in place of Acklin's vocals." Soulwalking is also worth to check out every few weeks as they post new and classic soul records with audio clips. comment! (4 comments) Monday, 24. September 2001
tops, September 24, 2001 at 7:12:28 PM CEST some stuff off euroranch i like the mp3s off euroranch: not only for the music but also the lo-fi quality gives them an extra (punky?) something! it was through the site that i finally got to really appreciate Herbert (i'd heard a lot about him before but never realised the genius i was being exposed to). On Sunday 16th there were some good tracks by Plone... but the best tracks i ever got off there (Herbert excepted) were these sensational tunes from back in June. comment! (4 comments) Sunday, 9. kris, September 9, 2001 at 6:26:26 PM CEST our own internet radio station lcbo and modofo found a website where you can store 3 gb of music and compile mixes. these mixes will be streamed continuously for 2 weeks. they have to follow some official broadcast rules (e.g. at least 5 hours of music, not too many songs taken off the same record). i was thinking about the conceptional aspects. what do you think about these ideas?
this means that every participant will put a little effort into the project to have an exciting quality mix every two week that may even attract some people from outside to tune in. comment! (11 comments) Wednesday, 5. September 2001

kris, September 1, 2001 at 7:22:47 PM CEST R.I.P. Grand Royal This is too sad: "Mounting debts, decreasing assets and exceedingly harsh industry conditions have forced the venerable Grand Royal label to close its doors. The announcement came today that the label could no longer operate at its current loss." The Beasty Boys were probably the most influential band for me. Not only because of their own music, but also because the Grand Royal Magazine. Like all the good stuff, the two issues I had, have been "borrowed". There is a thread on Metafilter which mentions Grand Royal's Rare Music Radio. They play exactly the stuff I like: 60's/70's Soul, Funk, Jazz, Brazil, Latin, Reggae, Dub and some Cheese. (Here is the directory with the record covers of the songs they play.) I wish I had known that link before. comment! And most of this album of 1970 is really boring bullshit, but the 9 minutes long title track gives you a T-bone steak on LSD. Psycho, Rock, Psycho! comment! (4 comments) tops, September 1, 2001 at 3:21:57 AM CEST why not! jam on the breaks (sic) I've been listening to a compilation by this name in the car for a week or so now.I came by it via someone i was seeing who turned out to be a crak addict: some great tunes all the same! basically a few well known ones that aren't that well known, like th e one off coldcut's remix of paid in full. also classics such as dyke and the blazers 'let a woman be a woman' (nicely juxtaposed with showmen inc - tramp). my current faves are nico gomez - blupita, badder than evil - gordon's war and jimmy and the bonzos - where's the bridge. the last of these gets in there merely on the basis of containing the line #she's the one that makes me want to jump and shout#, which brings carnival visions to my mind rather than heavy funk, and for the closing line: 'where is that confounded bridge?' comment! kris, August 29, 2001 at 12:36:34 AM CEST Stefi Akos - Mariguana Cha-Cha-Cha I finally managed to get this song. It is definitely a novelty record. The Mo' Horizons played it on a party. It sounds pretty much like Perez Prado, but this is not Spanish or Cuban--it is Hungarian. All I could find about this song is this page in German. The song was recorded in 1958 in Hungary and it was a big hit. They also recorded a German vocal and a big band instrumental version in East Germany. In 1961 the singer escaped to Switzerland and so the song disappeared from the offical radio play lists. The text also says that it refers to a Carribean island and not to dope. It is also reported that the East German President danced the "Mariguana Cha-Cha-Cha" with the wive of the Foreign Secretary of Russia. If you look for it on the net, it is credited to a Hungarian Techno (??) act called "Anima Sound System". They covered it and re-released the original version on the same record. comment! stx23, August 27, 2001 at 7:09:44 PM CEST Andrew Weatherall Perhaps best known for the Sabres of Paradise, Andrew Weatherall first rose to prominience after his overhaul of the lacklustre rock ballad "I'm Losing More Than I'll ever have" by Primal Scream turning it into "Loaded". He them went on to produce one of the greatest albums of the 90s(IMO), Screamadelica. After Andrew Wright posted Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea earlier, I've added one of my other favourites, The Grid - Floatation(Subsonic Grid). comment! (one comment) ... Next page
