jani, August 26, 2001 at 10:39:08 PM CEST Encre - Encre Encre's (aka yann tambour) selftitled debut album just out on clapping music is definitely something worth giving a good listen to. plus a review if you're into french. (sorry for editing your message. just want to remark that the macro is <% weblog.image name="[name]" align="left" %> and the server actually downsized the images.) comment! One album came of this relationship and one single, Autumn Leaves(a French jazz perennial, supposedly). This is the remix by Mixmaster Morris of the Irresistable Force, about the only worthwhile thing from that period. comment! (4 comments) kris, August 26, 2001 at 3:58:18 PM CEST the sidewinder the first time i heard this song was in the early or mid 90's in a radio show of the beastie boys. it was a special in an afternoon programme with focus on indie. the beasties made a great selection of reggae, soul, funk, new wave, hip-hop, cheese and jazz. i suppose thousands of indie kids thought WTF as they spun lee morgan's "sidewinder" (lo-fi version of filepile) in the original 10 minutes version from 1963. my favorite version is that of kai winding, though. it's on "dirty dog". the liner notes say that winding was "the performing maestro at hugh hefner's new york playboy club". i don't think the bunnies used to be jazz aficionados and so this version is much, much more accessible. comment! modofo, August 24, 2001 at 10:11:01 AM CEST 2-in-1 Here's a great song by an unsigned artist, David Grumel. He's got a few songs on peoplesound, a great site for finding stuff. Lifestyle is my favorite. Also a super-duper Coldcut track posted to good old FilePile: Border (Coldcut vs. Silent Poets). comment! (8 comments) Thursday, 23. August 2001
jani, August 23, 2001 at 5:22:54 PM CEST Donovan - Get Thy Bearings Kieran Hebden played this on Coldcut's radioshow Solid-Steel a few months ago. "Its a real gem, unique, and a totally unexpected song for one familiar with only his hits" someone said on amazon and i have to agree. comment! (3 comments) Wednesday, 22. August 2001
kris, August 22, 2001 at 12:27:01 PM CEST Bonnie & Clyde [Herberts's Fred & Ginger Mix] Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot's "Bonnie & Clyde" remixed by Matthew Herbert. It has been released on a french import CD called "I Love Serge (electronicagainsbourg)". Vinyl is available on two separate LPs, so make sure you buy the right one. This version sounds like a typical Herbert track with an incredibly deep sexy bass line and french vocals on top. C'est un must! comment! (6 comments) Tuesday, 21. August 2001
lcbo, August 21, 2001 at 11:27:20 PM CEST Melvin Jackson - Cold Duck Time A funky song I uploaded to filepile a while ago with little fanfare. It's on my server right now. Get it here. comment! (2 comments) tops, August 21, 2001 at 7:47:47 PM CEST Bobby Lapointe I put Saucisson de Cheval No.1 up today. Bobby Lapointe is, I think, the Benny Hill of France. For while Benny Hill did do a lot of running around after women in underwear on his telly programme, he also wrote some great songs with 'jeu de mots' and so on. I don't know about Bobby Lapointe but I do know that it is sad that Benny Hill died a broken man, dropped by Thames television unceremoniously for pollitical correctness, in spite of earning them more money in international exports than the rest of their programmes put together. comment! In the mid-90's we used to have a weekly Radio Show (the BBBC) by the Blood Brothers a.k.a. Pressure Drop. They played a good mix of Drum & Bass, Break Beats, Hip-Hop, Dancehall and original 60's and 70's Jazz, Soul, Funk, Reggae and Dub. I taped some of their broadcasts, but all tapes have been "borrowed" by friends. Anyway, they played a long 60's Herbie Mann tune, sort of laid back Bossa Nova/Latin style with a great bass solo. I'd been looking for this ever since and today I found it. It is called "Comin' Home Baby". Read the line up. They have two (!!) double bass players. Great sound! Check "Summertime" on Filepile. comment! (no comments) kris, August 21, 2001 at 4:16:54 PM CEST Hmmm I was just thinking about a collaborative site where some people write about the tracks they have. Like one each day or less. No big reviews, just short notes, why the song or the album is great. It shouldn't be the obvious stuff, more like little treasures. Edutainment, that is. mp3s don't need to be uploaded since everybody knows how to find them. Or we could cooperate with filepile. What do you think? I could try to invite like 5 filepilers who always upload quality music. comment! (7 comments) |
