R.I.P. Grand Royal

This is too sad: "Mounting debts, decreasing assets and exceedingly harsh industry conditions have forced the venerable Grand Royal label to close its doors. The announcement came today that the label could no longer operate at its current loss."

The Beasty Boys were probably the most influential band for me. Not only because of their own music, but also because the Grand Royal Magazine. Like all the good stuff, the two issues I had, have been "borrowed".

There is a thread on Metafilter which mentions Grand Royal's Rare Music Radio. They play exactly the stuff I like: 60's/70's Soul, Funk, Jazz, Brazil, Latin, Reggae, Dub and some Cheese. (Here is the directory with the record covers of the songs they play.) I wish I had known that link before.

John Cale & Terry Riley: Church of Anthrax

church of anthrax Putting these names together you may expect arty-farty minimal music for string orchestra like Kronos Quartett or so.

And most of this album of 1970 is really boring bullshit, but the 9 minutes long title track gives you a T-bone steak on LSD.

Psycho, Rock, Psycho!

why not! jam on the breaks (sic)

I've been listening to a compilation by this name in the car for a week or so now.I came by it via someone i was seeing who turned out to be a crak addict: some great tunes all the same!

basically a few well known ones that aren't that well known, like th e one off coldcut's remix of paid in full. also classics such as dyke and the blazers 'let a woman be a woman' (nicely juxtaposed with showmen inc - tramp). my current faves are nico gomez - blupita, badder than evil - gordon's war and jimmy and the bonzos - where's the bridge. the last of these gets in there merely on the basis of containing the line #she's the one that makes me want to jump and shout#, which brings carnival visions to my mind rather than heavy funk, and for the closing line: 'where is that confounded bridge?'
