Stefi Akos - Mariguana Cha-Cha-Cha

I finally managed to get this song. It is definitely a novelty record. The Mo' Horizons played it on a party. It sounds pretty much like Perez Prado, but this is not Spanish or Cuban--it is Hungarian. All I could find about this song is this page in German.

The song was recorded in 1958 in Hungary and it was a big hit. They also recorded a German vocal and a big band instrumental version in East Germany. In 1961 the singer escaped to Switzerland and so the song disappeared from the offical radio play lists. The text also says that it refers to a Carribean island and not to dope. It is also reported that the East German President danced the "Mariguana Cha-Cha-Cha" with the wive of the Foreign Secretary of Russia.

If you look for it on the net, it is credited to a Hungarian Techno (??) act called "Anima Sound System". They covered it and re-released the original version on the same record.

very nice

I am liking this track. The fact that it's Hungarian makes it even better. Here is a page in english on Anima Sound System.

hungary

it is really hard to guess which language it is. the first time i heard in in the club i thought it is some obscure spanish accent.

btw, jani, hungarian is said to be close to finnish. is that true? can you understand something?

not one word :P

the finns speak a uralic language, as do the hungarians. all the uralic languages originate from a common proto-language, but i don't think too many similarities exist anymore. it's all gibberish to me.
